Yesterday when I was leaving my dad told me that when it comes to planes and transferring flights something inevitably goes wrong, and, as much as i hate saying it, he was right! After some sad goodbyes at the airport and a turbulent flight to Charlotte, I was in my seat for my flight to Frankfurt. They were shutting the doors when a woman a few rows in front of me decided she was too sick to fly. After getting her off the plane it took over an hour to get her bags out of the cargo holds... It was miserable! The overnight flight felt unreal-- at four am Raleigh time the flight attendant woke everyone up with a "good morning" and gave us breakfast- little sleep and sore legs were the main memories of that flight.
We landed in Frankfurt under a lot of stress to catch our connecting flight. The Frankfurt security took those from our flight connecting to Florence on a bus to a customs location and then continued on towards our plane where we found out it had left... 5 minutes early. This left 13 UNC students stranded in the baggage claim of the Frankfurt airport having to find our way to a new flight! Fortunately, everyone we asked for help (at least 10 people...) was very helpful to a clearly jet lagged and confused group of Americans. We ended up on a flight leaving 5 hours later.
I was bummed our flight to Florence was going to be in the dark because I wanted to see all the scenery, but I was given this incredible view which made up for it!
We went to our school for our housing check in, paraded through the streets of Florence with our suitcases, and are now happily in our AWESOME new apartment! More on that to come, but jet lag has priority tonight!
The adventure begins!!!!!
